“I love working in Spain, because the light is so soft and warm,” says Eric
Kuster, and in this project – an apartment overlooking the golf club and with
a fantastic view over the mountains – he’s carefully emphasised the natural,
easy-breezy charm of the residence by working with natural, organic
materials such as stone, silk and wood, and to a palette of white on white.
Polished surfaces and leather, meanwhile, allow light to bounce off every
surface. “As a holiday home, it’s vital the space has a relaxed, fl exible vibe.
That’s why we gave what was previously an outdoor area the versatility to be
both and indoor and an outdoor space by adding folding glass doors. We
injected playfulness, too, via unexpected elements – the pendant light made
out of a piece of old drift-wood, for instance. And how did the apartment’s
owners react to his efforts?
“I always aim to exceed my clients’ expectations, and what made this project a particular joy was the owners’ reaction to our design. The owners had said that, previously, although they’d had the place for years, they seldom used it, simply because they didn’t like its look and the feel. Now, they use it all the time – Marbella really has become their second home.”
